A training workshop was jointly organized by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) and the National Centre for Mapping and Remote Sensing (CNCT) on February 20, 2024 at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries (MAWRF) of Tunisia. It brought together representatives of the Regional Agricultural Development Commissioners (CRDAs) from the 24 governorates of Tunisia as well as experts from the General Directorates of the Ministry of Agriculture and focused on the need to improve the ownership and use of the MISLAND, MISBAR and GUETCROP tools.

The workshop kickstarted with the speech of Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra, OSS Executive Secretary who recalled the harmful effects of climate change and the importance of increased resilience and improved adaptation for a better management of water resources. Mr. Ridha Gabouj, Secretary of State, spoke on behalf of H.E.Mr. Abdelmonem Belati, Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries of Tunisia and highlighted the Minister’s recommendation to adopt Earth Observation tools in support of decision-making.

The training covered theoretical aspects as well as concepts related to EO promotion for agricultural monitoring and natural resources management. Furthermore, practical demonstrations were made to explain how to use the tools developed with various applications such as monitoring irrigated and cultivated areas, analysis of early warnings, monitoring of crop growth and forest fire management.

Besides, this meeting was an important step for the technical officers to reach a consolidated awareness on the advantages and assets of the tools and services developed within the framework of the GMES&Africa project. It also helped define a roadmap to help the CRDA representatives develop specific case studies on the use of platforms in response to their own needs.
