GMES and COPERNICEA together for the preservation of the African lands
The training workshop on Ecosystem Natural Capital Accounting (ENCA) taking place from May, 08 to 12, 2023 in Niamey, Niger will highlight the GMES&Africa and COPERNICEA regional initiatives which have both contributed to the establishment of geospatial decision support systems in Africa.
GMES&Africa aims to support decision-making for a sustainable water and natural resources management, while COPERNICEA focuses on spatio-temporal monitoring of the ecosystem services condition in Africa. As part of these initiatives, an ENCA promoting regional platform has been set up and the MISLAND-Africa platform development process has been initiated. This platform will host the continental land degradation monitoring service and will serve as a one-stop-shop, providing access to a series of indicators based on Earth Observation products.
MISLAND-Africa has already established communities of practice and a network of experts bringing together institutions and users from all regions of Africa. The OSS-North Africa Consortium, with the support of the African Union, is committed to supporting these initiatives by fostering the acquisition of useful data and knowledge for the Sustainable Land Management and the Fight Against Land Degradation. With this in mind, a special effort will be made to upgrade the synergy and cross-fertilization with COPERNICEA.
