"Opportunities and challenges related to the use of Earth Observation (EO) for sustainable development" is the central theme around which members of the GMES North Africa Consortium are convening for their second regional workshop, from September 20 to 22, 2023, in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
Leaders and focal points of member institutions, including CUCT, CNCT, DRC, LCRSSS, CRTEAN, CRASTE-LF, NGO Tenmiya, and OSS, are attending this meeting.
The opening of the workshop was officiated by Dr. Mokhtar Ould Henda, Secretary-General of Mauritania's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Others present included Mr. Cheikh Saad Bouh Kamara, President of the University of Nouakchott, Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra, Executive Secretary of the Sahara and Sahel Observatory and lead of the North Africa consortium, Mr. Bechir Salay, representative of the African Union Commission, Mr. Marco Clerici, Scientific Research Project Manager at the European Union Commission (JRC), Mr. Hedi Ghashut from the Regional Remote Sensing Center of North African States (CRTEAN), and Mr. Anas Emran from CRASTE-LF.
The first day kicked off with a high-level roundtable centered on two key themes: the first addressing space sciences and technologies for North Africa's sustainable development, looking at the current situation and main challenges; and the second revolving around strategies to reinforce policies and initiatives promoting Earth Observation (EO) in North African countries.
This inaugural day served to enhance awareness of the benefits of Earth Observation, emphasizing its role in decision-making and sustainable management of natural resources, particularly in North Africa.
Subsequent sessions also underscored the potential of Earth Observation in monitoring land and ecosystem degradation, implementing global developmental agendas, and crafting national and regional strategies and plans.
