COPERNICEA and GMES&Africa: synergy for the assessment and analysis of Natural Capital in Africa, May 27, 2024

As part of the #COPERNICEA project implemented by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory - OSS, Mr. Evence Zoungrana, representative of the GMES North Africa Consortium, presented the points of synergy between the two regional projects GMES&Africa and COPERNICEA, on May 27, 2024. He introduced the GMES products and services which will be used in the Ecosystem Natural Capital Accounting (ENCA) development process in the OSS area of ​​action and the COPERNICEA member countries.

The data from #MISBAR, #MISLAND and #GuetCrop services will be capitalized for the establishment of the data infrastructure necessary for ecosystem accounting and for the production of the land cover change account, the ecosystem water account and the ecosystem carbon account. Furthermore, Mr. Zoungrana highlighted the relevance of the approach used for the development of the ENCA based on the quick start kit and the Kangaré, and which will be capitalized by GMES&Africa. According to him, the areas of collaboration and cross-fertilization between GMES&Africa and COPERNICEA cover: (i) technical aspects related to Cloud Computing offering more resources for data processing, Machine Learning providing more automation of certain tasks and scaling of the results, (ii) thematic aspects, related to knowledge sharing on approaches and data (SDG 15.3.1 and Land Degradation Neutrality - LDN), ( iii) awareness raising among decision-makers and users, based on the dissemination of various products (advocacy, policy briefs, etc.), and (iv) aspects linked to the exploitation of multi-thematic data and indicators at better resolutions (Copernicus Sentinel data).
