The GMES&Africa Libya national workshop which took place in Djerba on October 4-5, 2023, brought together end users of GMES services and various stakeholders in Libya involved in the second phase of the project to discuss tools, platforms and services for sustainable management of natural resources in Libya.
The workshop made it possible to present the three platforms developed namely, MISLAND and to explain the services it provides (monitoring Land Degradation Neutrality through the Sustainable Development Goal 15.3.1 indicator, sensitivity to water, wind and coastal erosion, change in vegetation cover, quantification of areas affected by forest fires.
GUETCROP, the Crop Monitoring and Early Warning in North Africa platform was the second platform to be presented to participants. In addition to the reminder of the GUETCROP operational uses, functionalities and services at the level of decision-makers, analysts and administration, this presentation made it possible to discuss case studies and to review indicators (index of normalized vegetation NDVI, normalized precipitation index SPI, water satisfaction indicator WSI, etc.).
The workshop took end with the Monitoring Integrated Services for Best Assessment for Natural Resources platform, MISBAR. The presentation of the platform gave rise to a demonstration on the different interfaces, functionalities as well as the usefulness of MISBAR in the acquisition and processing of satellite data and derived indicators relating to the volumes of water used.
The workshop allowed the various stakeholders and participants to become aware of the importance of space technology and remote sensing in the optimal management of natural resources in North Africa. It gave the different entities the opportunity to exchange on the best practices and pave the way for stronger collaborations.
Feedback on the benefits, challenges and proposals for improvement will contribute to come up with case studies and design advocacy for the effective implementation of the platforms.
